UnrealEd links

Post by CTC-JimRimya »

Hello all!

I just wanted to share some of the good tutorials and mapping resources that I've discovered over the last couple years. They have helped me out tremendously and I refer to them often.

http://architectonic.planetunreal.games ... level.html
This set of tutorials is what got me started. Pretty well written and covers a lot of topics, including terrain and advanced lighting.

http://blitz.unrealplayground.com/tutorials/bots.html
A great tutorial on bot pathing. Everything you need to make the bots fight hard is right here. I know a lot of people overlook the bot pathing, but I think a map is not complete until the bots play hard too! (Maybe not so much with VCTF maps).

http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/wiki/
The Unreal wiki. Kind of all over the place, and it covers all versions of unreal, so make sure you're looking at the ut2k3/2k4 pages (and not the U99 stuff). There are a lot of hidden nuggets of gold here, and a lot of stuff to wade through.

http://udn.epicgames.com/Two/WebHome.html
This is the UDN (unreal developers network) for the Unreal2 engine. I think it's managed by the guys who developed the engine itself. Again, a lot of great info here, but it assumes you know a lot going in.

http://outpt.co.uk/articles.php
A nice set of tuts from someone who has made some sweet looking maps! Always a go-to if you're having problems with HOMs and other glitches.

http://www.angelmapper.com/gamedev/tuto ... orials.htm
Angel Mapper's tuts. She's made some awesome maps too, and has really done some amazing things with the engine. Her tuts range from simple to highly advanced.

http://dace.unreal.co.za/design.php
Another good set of starter tutorials. Thanks to Mr. Bean for finding this one.

** ADDED 7/8/08 **, updated 2/1/11 (Thanks, Bean!)
http://builderbrush.com/content/ut2004-texture-index
Complete texture index! Very nice.

** ADDED 10/20/08 **
http://www.slayweb.com/tutorials/tut1.php
An excellent article about making cubemaps for reflecting your level onto a water surface (as opposed to using a generic water texture)

http://www.newmedia.lincoln.ac.uk/thodg ... eslist.htm
Another good set of tutorials. Covers a lot of topics. In particular, I got a lot of info from workshop 9 (volumes) and workshop 12 (scripted actors that work in net games).

** ADDED 12/1/08 **
Some cool skybox textures found by Bean!
http://www.redfactionview.net/red.htm

** ADDED 4/18/09 **
Static mesh index
http://wiki.beyondunreal.com/Legacy:Sta ... kage/Index

** ADDED 9/10/09 **
An introduction to the Material Browser and table of contents to the different Shaders. (Thanks to Mr. Bean for the link)
http://udn.epicgames.com/Two/MaterialTutorial.html

** ADDED 8/18/10 ** (Thanks, Mr. Bean)

Good luck!

Building maps is something I would like to learn. It was suggested to me by Jeffrey Hage (the author of Suspense2k4, EgyptianMantaWar, and Pandora) that I check out: http://www.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/sv_home.php
Maybe this will be helpful to some of you :)

Yeah, and if you have the special 2-dvd edition of UT2004, the second DVD is filled with TUTs from 3dbuzz. That and these links is where I learned most of what I know.

Stumbled on this site: http://www.unreal.co.za/dacemaps/Unreal ... s.php?pg=7
I don't know how good it is (I'm trying to learn), but check it out Jim.

Wow!!

Thanks for the links to those great tut's on map making! I, just personally, have started mapping like maybe 2 months ago and I love it! It's a great way to show your creativity and a good way to relax after a long, hard day of work! I'm always looking for tut's on how to improve my mapping and these links are great. Once thing is for sure, I probably haven't even used 1/10th of the options available to me in ED to make maps so these tut's will help me expand my knowledge.

Happy mapping to all beginner mappers! Just enjoy it! I know I DO!!

CRYSTAL! Good to see that you're getting into mapping! Yes, it is a good release of creative energy. Let me know if you have any questions. I or Salchicha may be able to answer them. We're hardly mapping pros, but we do try hard!

I always have LOTS of questions about mapping but I'll hit you guys up on the really important ones...Thanks for the offer to help me out! I love this mappin' stuff! w00t!

Do you guys still have a BR server or is that gone now? I recently made a BR map and I'd like to share it with you, but if you don't have a BR server anymore, then there's no point. :? Oh wait...there is a point! Come check it out on my server!! That's a good idea! ;) You guys are always welcome there!

The name of my new map is called BR-[RGC]-Magical Mushrooms! I hope you like it! ;)

OGG CONVERTER

In game music files are .ogg format. If you'd like to have custom music in your map, you'll need to convert it first. This is a free download.
http://www.download.com/Free-Mp3-Wma-Og ... 93572.html
After converting it, place it in your UT music folder. In the editor, go to: view / level properties / audio / song. Type in the name of the file (without .ogg extention), press enter, and save. Pan comido.
