So what maps do you love/hate?

Post by Lazy.Pirate »

I'm sure most people are aware of my reputation when it comes to maps, and while im usually pretty vocal about it, i dont hear many other opinions on maps, one way or the other.

So what maps do you really like to play on, and what maps do you really hate to play on? and if you can, give some reasons why you like or dislike a map.

Least favorites:
- GuiltyPleasure - Not fun. Not even for a second.
- AardvarkLaunch - Drags it's feet. I find my self staring at the clock waiting for the next map.

Favorites:
- Frontline - The best Manta run map ever. The design caters to a wide variety of playing styles. Such a great vibe, and good memories.
- Gazzah - Great layout and jaw dropping gorgeous. Always gg's on Gazzah.
- Amped - Fast action good fun. Manta runs or Foot runs work equally well. Would have liked to see more content from this gifted conversion author.

I like UT because it's fast paced and skill oriented. Hitscan is a nice dimension, but not the only dimension. I prefer faster maps that have continuous action and encourage use of all the guns, especially close quarters volleys with flag/rockets. Manta runs are a strong plus.

Least Favorite:
- AardvarkLaunch
- Pretty much anything by Id other than hedgemaze
- Igloos or any other plodding maps where defense/ranged hitscan has the advantage (sitting a mile away with the lg doesn't count towards skill and it's not fun for either side (yeah I can do it to, but it's boring as hell))

Favorite:
- MB House - fast, spammy, favors mantas
- Bloodbath - fast, spammy
- Gazzah - complicated, million different paths, but still compact enough to always be in a firefight. structurally probably the best map I've ever played
- CTC Smallfry - small, fast
- Magis Funmap - fast, easy to stack health for foot runs, favors mobile players

I'd say at least half of the cTc/Bean maps are in my top 20. Agree BAs conversions are great.

Favorite:
Spaced2- Was a great map because it worked for players of a lower skill level, but still had opportunites to show off a bit.
OpenSpace- Very simple map that demanded a higher skill level to play offense or defense.
Alley- Always fun sprint to be first at the line and lots of random terrain that could lead to accidental scoring

Least Favorites:
Maps with a prefix of ONS or CTF. You know why.

Yeah, one time Vapor got 420 points. I thought you of all people would have remembered that number

I have a few faves.

MB-Hydro is a really fun map and it was really good to work on it with Bean.

Gazzah is an all time fave.

Aggressive Alleys for the great memories with Mikefiend.

Escape from New York...my best work as a mapper in my opinion.

Unfaves:

Id conversions except for the one Ghost mentioned.

I know there are more but that is all I remember.

Yah that one is great! Wish it got more play time.

Also one of the last ones Bean did. The one with the Egyptian theme.

Favorites:
Bedrooms is probably my favorite map. It's a nice balance of foot running and vehicles imo.

Aggressive Alleys is my definition of a classic map. It's one of the first VCTF maps I played, and it's still one of the best.

Egyptian War, the original. I don't remember exactly why but I remember hating the shit out of Phage's remake.

Illusion is definitely my guilty pleasure. One of the few Kantham maps that I consider playable.

Redrooms is probably the most brilliant VCTF map there is, using an old idea to make something new. Probably the best remake map there is. I personally still prefer the original but I'm probably in the minority.

Doughnut, Zoned, and Binary Space are all solid

Meh
A lot of maps probably fit into this category but some notables:

zX Gallery I used to love, but kind of hate now.

Actioncity is perfectly situated between love and hate. I like playing it for about 20 minutes, but rounds usually last 40 minutes at least.

Lapse is good, but pretty boring most of the time.

Hate

Too many to list but anything like Lonesome Glen pretty much, which is the worst map that was legitimitely accepted into the community. Fuck that map, seriously.

Slax is awful

Kantham's manta map, good lord.

Archangel, Aardvark, etc.

Never got why people liked Backbone

Misty Glen is too stalematey for me.

And I know I'm probably the only one who thinks Basically is a bad map, but I mean seriously. Hitscan spam central zzz.

Nice layout. My only problem with it is the only weapon locker is up by the flag where it can get tank spammed.

Any medium sized maps, if you are going to make a large map we should see about ONS but otherwise magisfunmap, bloodbath, or a good manta running map. Playing with you guys it doesn't matter what map.

Backbone is a great 6v6 or 8v8 map, both foot and manta run options. Like a lot of good maps they get too defensive when played on a full server and become stalemates.
