How about fuck them with a rolled up wad of 100s.

I'll be opting out of the next game. It's already growing stale.

I'd pay $5 a month, maybe even more IF the following points were met:

- The initial game was free (I'd pay more per month then) or under $30.
- The map packs were free and I was guaranteed at least two in a year.

MW2 gave us two map packs in a year, and with them and the initial purchase of the game, I spent $90. I got that out of it and a lot more, so I'm not complaining. Black Ops cost the same to buy, and at the pace they're going, they will most likely give us two map packs, so it's all the same. On a pay per month plan, as long as those two points I mentioned are met, I'd be spending about the same amount of money in about the same amount of time, so it's all good.

Anyway, we'll see what happens.

-They promise to use lube.
-They pull out slowly.

Think about it though...
They have an obligation to their stock holders to fair better year after year. If this actually works, then they will meet that obligation and have a steady cash flow.

They will milk this IP until its dead.

This MAY open doors for online experiences to be subscription based in more games...More profit for the industry.

Someones got to take a shot with a big IP and it just happens to be Call Of Duty.

They have to please their shareholder somehow...and gamers seem to enjoy take it up the a**.

Activision used their large franchise CoD to pave their way to paid DLC. Capcom used SF4 and RE5. Now it's standard affair to release sequels to game that are half-finished and made whole with paid DLC. ($90-120 gets you the complete experience nowadays.) The days of free map packs and complete rosters with more than two different costumes are gone... Already seeing companies forgo/lying about releasing the open SDK for map creations/mods in lue that it will slow down the process of milking money from gamers.

THQ, EA, and 2K already/are pondering the idea of having gamers pony up $10 to activate online access to games. Given that they are trying to cut the loss from people selling games secondhand and cutting down the loss from game rentals - it's still threatening. It entertains them with the exact thoughts that maybe they can get gamers to buy into paying for online play and earn millions every month like WoW does, but with less content.

If you want to see more from that fellow Michale Pachter, you can see him answer gaming related questions at: http://www.gametrailers.com/game/pach-attack/12619

He's quite accurate on his predictions and actually spelled out what has become of DLC these days. I personally don't care much for him since he works for Wedbush Securities and is helping these companies maintain the grasp on gamers' balls. Although he does provide interesting insight when he partakes in gaming panel debates.

Gamers these days do not have many protections from these abuses. Probably the most well known advocate for gamers is the ECA. Frankly, I don't believe they do much but funnel money into their pockets as a non-profit. I did have membership, but it was for their great benefits. They had like a 3-month free trial for Gamefly and 10% off codes for games and gaming accessories sold by Amazon. Needless to say those benefits are mute now because of cheapassgamers'/fatwallet/slickdeal abuses. I do not know what benefits they have these days, but I heard it was $1 for students and those in the military.

What I mean to say is I like taking it up the a** without lube and at a vicious pace. I buy CoD games twice, games that are poorly optimized, fighting games that are half-finished, etc. I admit I have a problem.

EDIT: Gah! The script-blocking is messing with the emoticons.

Guess I'll just have to start pirating games like Deathstrike does. Seems cheaper and a bigger FU to the gaming industry. SUCK MY NUTS YOU COCK SU.. sorry.. got a little carried away.

Honestly, I don't care for the ongoing payment model. I like to choose when I want to play and most of the time I go in waves. Sometimes I can go a month without playing, then decide I want to. I don't like having to choose. I think some of these companies are crossing the boundaries as to where their place is. They see WoW and SecondLife and such get by with charging monthly subscriptions and say, hey why not? Younger and younger gamers aren't going to care if they own the game, just the access. The real point I guess is, if a game is good enough, it will become popular regardless of the subscription fees. But not many games will be able to do this.

I don't see the pay once model going away any time soon. But DLCs are most certainly here to stay. It's just too lucrative.
