In summary: You get field upgrades if you do squad based things: revive or heal squadmates, heal vehicles that squadmates are in, dispense ammo to squadmates, etc. The squad loses the field upgrades if ALL MEMBERS of the are dead at the same time. Thus, if you see the message 'last in squad' (or whatever it says) you should hunker down and wait a moment until another in your squad respawns.
Also, we have been playing lately with the squad orders. If you're the leader of the squad, you can tell the rest of the squad what point to attack or defend by pointing to it in the hud and pressing your spot button (usually Q). If the squad then completes that task, they and the squad leader get points... free points the way I see it.
So, if there are at least three of us, we should always endeavor to start our own squad with one of us as the leader, and use squad orders as much as we can.
