Mantle is here

Post by CTC-Salchicha »

"Johan Andersson, one of the Technical Directors in the Frostbite team, said about the update: "Battlefield 4 on PC is already quite heavily optimized using DirectX 11 and DirectX 11.1, but with Mantle we are able to go even further: we’ve significantly reduced CPU cost in our rendering, efficiently parallelized it over multiple CPU cores and reduced overhead in many areas." Andersson added that the best performance gains are observed when a game is bottlenecked by the CPU "which can be quite common even on high-end machines".
DICE did a "couple of benchmarks" using Battlefield 4 on a variety of configurations. With an AMD A10-7850K 'Kaveri' APU Mantle provides a 14 per cent improvement, on a system with an AMD FX-8350 and Radeon 7970 Mantle provides a 25 per cent boost, while on an Intel Core i7-3970x Extreme system with 2x AMD Radeon R9 290x cards a huge 58 per cent performance increase was observed."

Requires catalyst 14.1 (not yet released as far as I know)

That's hot.
Don't think the 6970 makes the cutoff though.

I don't think the 6970 does either, but it seems they will address that in a future driver release. At first I read that only the R series is supported but, then in the example, they use a 7970 so I don't know for sure.

Cat 14.1 are out. I installed and played with Mantle last night. Seems a bit smoother for the most part, but when it lagged, it lagged. I'd like to know what others are experiencing.

I haven't played with it enough to tell. Maybe tonight and/or tomorrow.

Somewhat related... Has anyone tried Windows 8.1 vs. 7? I've heard there's a modest performance increase with 8 and I'm looking to refresh my OS sometime soon... but I hate 8.

From HARD OCP article:

'Even though AMD Mantle was better overall with frame times, we did have some occasional oddities that are showing up in these graphs. Often times we have one or two large spikes that go toward 30ms frame times. This did not happen under D3D, only Mantle. This "lag" was felt in the game as we played. The game would hitch, or stutter briefly, and the graphs above show these large lag spikes. We think this isn't anything to be concerned about at this point in time, since we know this is all Beta. DICE will make further updates to Mantle with patches, and AMD will make further driver updates. It's probably just a bug that can be worked out.'

This is what I was experiencing.

I have heard the same about 8.1 myself. This is the article above, they use 8.1 to test:

Do you have to roll back the drivers, or can you just turn off Mantle in the menu?

Don't you mean... Dis-Mantle..

I'd much rather consistent, but slightly lower frames than higher frames with large spikes, especially in the context of multiplayer.

The problem goes away by just turning off mantle. Yes, dis-mantle.
Mantle is here? Mantle is queer!
